Hale White

Famous under the pseudonym ‘Mark Rutherford’, Hale White was a late Victorian novelist, noted for his studies of Nonconformist experience. His landmark trilogy, the ‘Mark Rutherford Novels’, charts his progress from Protestant Christianity to a form of Wordsworthian pantheism, offering a profound psychological study of the Victorian ‘crisis of faith’. A close friend of George Eliot, White was also an early exponent of ‘New Woman’ fiction.
