Livius Andronicus

Livius Andronicus was a third century BC dramatist and epic poet of the Old Latin period of the Roman Republic. He composed the first Roman epic, a translation of Homer’s ‘Odyssey’, as well as numerous tragedies and comedies, developing a uniquely Latin style of poetry for the first time. Though the extant works of this innovator are frustratingly few, the significance of studying Livius Andronicus and his work cannot be overstated. By the most revered of Roman Classical writers, he was held as the founder of Roman epic poetry and drama. His works determined the course that Roman literature would follow for more than a century.
